Highlight the day-to-day activities of the position. This will help candidates understand the work environment and the activities they will be exposed to on a daily basis. This level of detail will help the candidate determine if the role and company are a right fit, helping you attract the best candidates for your position.
Here’s a sample of job descriptions, ranked from good to bad. Looking through them alongside their scores makes it obvious why some are better than others, and is a good exercise to teach yourself to get better at writing them.
A job description may include relationships with other people in the organization: Supervisory level, managerial requirements, and relationships with other colleagues. A job description need not be limited to explaining the current situation, or work that is currently expected; it may also set out goals for what might be achieved in the future, such as possible promotion routes and conditions.
You may find it useful to leave a section on your template to be used for detailing the supervision of a particular position, and/or the extent to which it is supervised. This can help an individual understand who he or she would report to while performing a particular position, and the role of the position within the hierarchy of a company or organization.
